Great Passenger Ships of the World Today

A Photographic Look at the Great Passenger Ships today
One Hundred Eighty three pages of Ocean Liners is what you will find when you take a look at the title "Great Passenger Ships of the World Today." This hardcover book features photo's of almost all the ships reviewed and a history from their construction to their more recent port of call. Kludas has compiled one of the most concise Ocean Liner books next to the Fifty Famous Liners series from Braynard. An Appendix list the ships in Alphabetical order. Liners that have become floating hotels or featured a rich history but are now laid up are also featured. You'll find Information on the S.S. United States all the way to the maybe less known Aquarama. Because of the timeline included with each ship biography,It was through reading this that we discovered the unlucky history of the now destroyed Achilli Lauro. The title also includes 10 pages of full color pictures and an appendix showing passenger ships withdrawn between 1986 and 1991. Readers will be saddened to see pictures of the Sally Albatross after a fire engulfed her decks. I enjoyed reading this encyclopedia of Great ships, all which registered over 10,000 tons, and refer to it often after a Sea visit to point out ships we've seen in port. My only disappointment is that since this book was written Princess has launched several new ships as well as Disney, and other operators. An update would already be approprite for this book. Nontheless, for the ship enthusiast, "Great Passenger Ships of the World Today" from Arnold Kludas is a great title to have in a personal library.

Great Voyages in Small Boats: Solo Transatlantic

Authors: Ann Davison, David Lewis, and Hannes Lindemann
Average review score:

hard to find, but worth it!
another extraordinary, classic sailing book that's sadly slipped away from common knowledge and is quite hard to find -- i believe this book was originally published (around 1956) as 'My Boat is So Small'. Davidson is a great writer in the tradition of witty, frugal, understated WWII-era brits. her single handed adventure, following the death of her husband, falls squarely into the pantheon of sailors whose lack of experience or technical ability is inspirationally surpassed in guts, perserverance, faith, determination, and common sense. this is certainly a book that deserves a lot more attention, and is a pleasure to read. Her earlier book 'Last Voyage' is even harder to find, but well worth it, and makes a very excellent companion to this book, though about half of it concerns WWII life in england -- though for sailors the fraction dealing with sailling still makes the book worth reading. In the spirit of singlehanded women, we must also reccomend Aebi's Maiden Voyage!

Guerrillas and Generals: The "Dirty War" in Argentina
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (30 October, 2001)
Author: Paul H. Lewis
Average review score:

The one book you should read about the Dirty War
I have studied the Argentine Dirty War for over 20 years, and if I were to recommend one book to anyone to read on the subject it would be this one. There are two things that Lewis does which really set this book apart from the literature on the subject so far.

First, Lewis describes and makes sense out of all of the background starting with Peron that led up to the Dirty War. This really helps place the Dirty War in its proper context so the reader can comprehend why such terrible things occurred later. He then gives a full account of all the atrocities committed by the Argentine military. In this way he does not exonerate or excuse the Dirty War, but does make sense of why things happened the way they did.

Second, Lewis points out that there really was a war going on. The guerrillas were active, were powerful, were committing acts of terrorism and were seriously threatening to destabilize the Argentine state. A lot of anti-military sources try to portray the security threat posed by the guerrillas as a figment of the military's imagination. This was simply not true. There was a real war going on and Lewis shows that this was the case. Lewis does not excuse the ways the military chose to deal with the guerrilla threat, but does explain why rational and normal men would choose to commit such horrorific acts. In their mind they were in a desperate life and death struggle, and they acted accordingly. In retrospect they made some very bad choices, but Lewis helps explain how it all seemed rational and necessary at the time.

This book is balanced, honest and cuts through a lot of the cherished popular myths. It is fair to both sides of the conflict. Finally it is well written and flows well. I got through it in two days. This book will become a classic text on the Argentine Dirty War.

Gunsmith Cats: Bean Bandits
Published in Paperback by Dark Horse Comics (21 June, 2000)
Authors: Kenichi Sonoda, Dana Lewis, Toren Smith, and Dark Horse Comics
Average review score:

Chasing Bean
This is volume 6 in the Gunsmith Cat series.

Bean makes a bet with Rally. If Rally can stop Bean from making a drug delivery, Bean will quit running drugs. If Rally loses, she promises to quit bugging him.

Rally has a few major setbacks. As a result of the events in previous volumes, Rally has lost all of her licenses except for her drivers license. She can't be a bounty hunter, possess a gun, or run her gun shop for at least a month.

Anytime Bean is involved, there will always be racing, and the race is a fantastic part of the story. Plus you have the usual action you can expect from this series. Misty, Minnie May, and Ken are here too. There are some humorous moments. The best involves Rally hiding in the closet while searching Bean's home. There's also the insensitivity of some people in how they talk to Rally about her situation at the beginning - Kate being stupid and Faye asking for a favor.

This is for mature audiences. There is some minor nudity (a little of Bean too) and suggestive moments. There are some close-ups of wounds being treated - as in stitches. The art is black and white so it may not be too bad for some people, and we're only talking about a couple of panels.

Hammer: One Big Lie
Published in Paperback by Dark Horse Comics (18 November, 1998)
Authors: Kelley Jones, Dana Lewis, and Toren Smith
Average review score:

Holding back the stars
Kelley Jones should have gotten more recognition for his work in the wonderful world of Cthuluian lore. Here we have yet another adaptation of H.P.'s brainchild being meshed into popular culture, and Kelley doesn't simply give you yet another boring take we've seen a million times over. Anyone who likes their monsters loathsome, their heroes a bit deranged, and their works of art Lovecraftian will enjoy this. Even if you just like the horror take, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by what Jones brings to the table.

Handbook of Chemometrics and Qualimetrics : Handbook of Chemometrics and Qualimetrics
Published in Hardcover by Elsevier Health Sciences (01 October, 1998)
Authors: B. G. M. Vandeginste, S. De Jong, P. J. Lewi, J. Smeyers-Verbeke, D. L. Massart, L. M. C. Buydens, and D. L. Massaart
Average review score:

One of the best summary books from chemometrics.
Nowadays the science and research of the quantitative relationhips between chemical structure of compounds and their physico-chemical, chromatographic (or any other scientifically measurable) behaviour are in the ascendant. This rising begun with the wide-spread of cheap computational capacity and resulting the development of many new multivariate mathematical-statistical methods. These are more and more refined and more and more easier to use them and give more and more information to the hand of scientists. The main problem, however, still exists: there is no statistically acceptable mmethod for measuring the significance level of multivariate methods. Therefore it is basically important for anybody, who wants to use multivariate methods to draw inferences from its results, to exactly know its mathematical background and employment fields.

These books are extremely useful for anybody who wants to learn about the newest methods and to use more suitably the 'older' ones. Finally, this opus is worthy continuation of Chatfield & Collins's book of "Introduction to Multivariate Analysis" and hoping become a basic handbook for any scientists.

Happy Easter, God
Published in Hardcover by Bethany House (January, 2001)
Authors: Elspeth Campbell Murphy and Jim Lewis
Average review score:

A Unique Easter Book--for Children AND Adults
There's nothing like this book on the market. The prayers and poems are truly child-centered, and the highly unusual pairing of each poem with a scriptural quotation invites adult readers to meditate both on Easter and on children's experience of it.

Simplicity and innocence--and surprising depth.
